Threads of time

There was a time when I spent sewing. Clothes for my infant daughter, wall hangings for her room, matching outfits for my toddlers. I cross-stitched, embroidered and quilted.

I’m not sure what the idiom ‘a stitch in time saves nine’ means but stitching brought moments of quiet focus.

  1. From The question usually asked is “saves nine what”? The ‘stitch in time’ is simply the prompt sewing up of a small hole or tear in a piece of material, so saving the need for more stitching at a later date when the hole has become larger. Clearly the first users of this expression were referring to saving nine stitches.
