Threads of time

There was a time when I spent sewing. Clothes for my infant daughter, wall hangings for her room, matching outfits for my toddlers. I cross-stitched, embroidered and quilted.

I’m not sure what the idiom ‘a stitch in time saves nine’ means but stitching brought moments of quiet focus.

  1. From phrases.org.uk: The question usually asked is “saves nine what”? The ‘stitch in time’ is simply the prompt sewing up of a small hole or tear in a piece of material, so saving the need for more stitching at a later date when the hole has become larger. Clearly the first users of this expression were referring to saving nine stitches.
