The New River is what Fort Lauderdale was built on. It runs from the Everglades to the Atlantic Ocean with fresh water becoming a mixture of fresh and salt, or brackish. It provides a glimpse of a quieter Fort Lauderdale with its lush tropical landscape and feeds into the Intracoastal waterway where homes become massive and manicured. Manatee can be seen at times and boaters are cautioned to be watchful of them.

      1. I never knew what “brackish” meant, so this was an educational treat. It’s what I love about blogging–free education! And the picture does look tranquil–I always associate Lauderdale with those crazy spring break stories….
